According to Egan, â€Å"Never let the kids see you sweat† (2006, p.1). The Worst Hard Time by Timothy Egan was announced as â€Å"a classical disaster tale† by the New York Times. This book was written to inform everyone about the untold story of those who survived the American Dust Bowl. The story documents how the darkest years of the Great Depression affected the economy and the people’s living environment as well. Egan’s book explains the importance of the Great Depression. Within this theme, Egan explores the struggle of survival and the broken promises made by the government. Struggle of Survival Bam and his family were moving from the high desert chill of Las Animas, Colorado, to Littlefield, Texas. Overnight, new towns were rising and inventing new technology like electric streetlights. But sooner than later it was all about to change. The first National Bank of Dalhart did not open for business in the 1930’s. Tens of thousands of farm families have had their savings swept away. At that time social security did not exist yet. So everyone was pissed and had to deal with the fact that their savings were gone. As banks, churches, and businesses were closed, food became insufficient. Prices of oil barrels were dropping drastically. They went from $1.43 a barrel to a Dime! Around 1930-31 2,294 banks went bust and 28,000 businesses failed. Shane Smith Professor Samuels English 102, Section 13 18 October 2012 Compare Contrast Essay The 1960’s was a carefree time period, a time when the â€Å"hippy† lifestyle was considered the norm. A time when the youth were often the voice, citizens were dedicated to bringing peace to the United States, the abolishment of segregation was occurring, and the Vietnam War had just begun. The poems I analyzed were both written in the early 1960’s, when segregation finally came to an end. Brooks being an African American woman surprised me, because her focus was not on the current major topic of segregation, whereas in contrast, Bob Dylan being Caucasian chose to focus on segregation in his poem/song, â€Å"The Times They Are a-Changin. † The irony in the poem’s I read, is the contrast between ethnicity of the poet’s, to their chosen topics. During the time the two poems were written, is when the African American people rose against segregation. The poem â€Å"We Real Cool,† is an open form poem wrote in 1960 by an African American author, Gwendolyn Brooks. Based on her ethnicity and the date of the poem, the reader would intend the topic to be based around the Civil Rights Movement. At the time Brooks wrote her poem she was in her early forties and the reader would believe her concern for segregation had lessened. Since 1917 Brooks had saw countless occasions of segregation, considering the fact that she had attended an all-black high school. She focused on the new occurring change, the change in attitude of teenagers at that time. Gwendolyn Brooks discovered the topic of her poem while walking by a pool hall. She discovered seven young men playing pool, drinking, cursing and having no worries. Brooks was disgusted at the sight of the younger generation not attending school and having no ambition to move on in life. Brooks was aware that there was a drug epidemic going on at the time and she knew that this behavior and usage of drugs will keep them in the pool hall for all of their lives. Two lines from the poem that would portray this analysis to the reader are the lines that say, â€Å"We strike straight†, and â€Å"We die soon†. (Brooks 4,8). The term â€Å"straight† usually refers to being clean of drugs and a better person and the term â€Å"strike† usually means to be against. With the last line â€Å"We die soon,† Brooks illustrates that the young men are slowly killing themselves. She remembers the struggle of herself and the generations before her, the opportunities for education and good jobs were few and far between. As Brooks sees the times are changing she is discouraged by the lack of ambition and the push-to-side attitude of the opportunities the younger generation has before them. In contrast, the closed form poem, â€Å"The Times They Are a-Changin† written by Bob Dylan had many similarities to Brooks’ poem, but also focused on segregation and the awareness that things were changing. In the poem, Dylan says, â€Å"Come senators, congressman Please heed the call Don’t stand in the doorway Don’t block up the hall/For he that gets hurt/Will be he who has stalled/There’s a battle outside/And it is ragin’. † (Dylan 23-30). In the first four lines from this section of the poem, Dylan is talking on a specific time in the Civil Rights Movement. Segregation was ending, but on June 11, 1963 at the University of Alabama, Caucasian officials stood in front of the doorway to an auditorium because they believed in keeping segregation alive. (History). Bob Dylan believed in equality and is believed to be an influence that started the â€Å"hippy† generation, which came about a year or so after Dylan’s 1963 poem/song. Dylan wants to emphasize the point that African Americans were growing into society and to grasp the concept that everything is changing and there will always be change. In comparison, these two poem’s share similarities about the youth of the 1960’s and the â€Å"carefree† lifestyle they were living. Brooks was much older than Dylan, but they were both aware of the change happening to the youth. Brooks had more of a stern way of saying these teenagers had too much freedom, that they were too blinded to realize the meaning of life, and that they were headed in the wrong direction. Brooks was older and wiser and spoke a warning to the youth of the consequences of the fast life, â€Å"We die soon†. (Brooks 8). Dylan himself was of the younger generation and spoke directly to his peers. He said in his poem/song, â€Å"Come mother and fathers/Throughout the land/And don’t criticize/What you can’t understand/Your sons and your daughters/Are beyond your command. † (Dylan 34-39) In comparison, Dylan had a more rebellious tone towards parents and authority. At the time these poems were written, the Vietnam War was being fought, and drugs and free love were popular among most youth. In conclusion, these two poems were both speaking to the young generation during the 1960’s, a tumultuous period in our history. It was a time for anti-war protests, Civil Right Movements against segregation, racism and anti-government sentiment. Brooks who was older and had been on the receiving end of racism and segregation chose to speak to the youth who had chosen a reckless lifestyle and abandon opportunity. Brooks uses sarcasm by saying, â€Å"We Real Cool† to get her point across that they aren’t as â€Å"Cool† from her perspective. Dylan on the other hand speaks to himself and his generation about the changing times. He speaks about the need to keep moving forward. He also seems to speak out against government and authority, their resistance to change mainly where segregation is concerned. Overall both poets are extremely aware of change in society during different periods in their lives and both believe change will continue on for the remainder of mankind. At the end of the play, who do you feel is most responsible for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet? Essay Romeo and Juliet are the epitome of true love and have been for hundreds of years. Their story is William Shakespeares best-known tragedy and one of his most popular plays. There are many factors that contribute to Romeo and Juliets deaths which include their own actions and decisions, fate and circumstances and the deeds of the other characters. Romeo is a young, intense and love-sick character from beginning to end. He is romantic and compassionate; however he is also fickle and single-minded. His unrequited infatuation for Rosaline: shell not be hit with Cupids arrow, she hath Dians wit; which caused him so much torment and sadness, disappears the moment he sees and meets Juliet as she appears in the dance like a: snowy dove trooping with the crows. This metaphor shows how beautiful Juliet is in comparison to the other young women at the ball. Romeos reaction is ironic as he denied to Benvolio that he could ever forget Rosaline, when Benvolio suggested that Romeo should meet other women at the party to take his mind off Rosaline: By giving liberty unto thine eyes examine other beauties. Romeo falls instantly in love with Juliet and Shakespeare shows us this by describing how Juliet has brought light into Romeos life: teaches the torches to shine bright. From the moment Romeo meets Juliet, his behaviour changes and by the time of the orchard scene, Act 2, Scene 2, he is animated and lively, a far cry from his dull behaviour over his love for Rosaline. Romeos friends and family noticed that his outlook has altered and in the company of his friends, Benvolio states: Why, is not this better now than groaning for love? Now art thou sociable; now art thou Romeo. He is well-regarded by the other characters in the play and many look up to him. However, his rushed decisions and unpredictable ways are, in the end, his downfall. Juliet is a young, unworldly girl who is not yet fourteen: My child is yet a stranger in the world; she hath not seen the change of fourteen years. Juliet is much quieter, obedient and more innocent than Romeo and is greatly influenced by his actions as she has never been in such a situation, so believes every word that he says. Her youth is a key factor in her changes in character throughout the play. At the beginning of the play, she is not too interested in marriage or finding a husband and when her mother broaches the question of her marrying Paris, Juliet avoids any direct answer: It is an honour that I dream not of. However, as with Romeo, we see a great change of character when she meets her love. She is no longer disinterested and passive but lively and excited: You kiss by thbook. She is now flirtatious and eager at the thought of a new love. When their relationship becomes serious and they are married, she matures a great deal and when problems start to arise, she is the on e who is sensible and practical, whereas Romeo threatens suicide rather than be banished. Her character changes, as she is above all an honest person in the beginning, yet she changes to deceive her family and lie to be with Romeo. By the end of the play, we have seen a complete reversal in Juliets character, from an innocent, honest young girl, to a serious woman who is deeply in love and whose only care is for Romeo. Many consider the rashness of Romeo and Juliets decisions and their youth to be the tragic flaws of their characters which lead to their many problems and downfalls. Throughout the play, from when Romeo and Juliet initially meet until their deaths in the final act, their romance is rushed and hasty, and all of their decisions are made on spur of the moment feelings, without any real thought or deliberation. Romeo and Juliets marriage was not an event that was organised or reasoned, they simply acted on their feelings of lust. The two lovers had known each other barely a day when they were married and this was an odd affair, even in this era, which stunned the friends who were involved in this matrimony. Friar Lawrence notices that Romeo has instantly forgotten Rosaline in favour of Juliet: Not in a grave, to lay one in, another out to have; which means that although he told Romeo to bury his love for Rosaline, he did not expect Romeo to find another so quickly. If Romeo and Juliet ha d had a conventional relationship which gradually developed over time from lust and infatuation into deep, meaningful love; then perhaps their relationship would not have ended in such catastrophe, as many of their problems are simply due to mistiming and emotional decisions. Romeo and Juliet both have their faults, yet Romeo is older and more aware than young Juliet and he is more at fault than her. He makes many of the rushed decisions and does not think through his actions. Romeo is Juliets first love, and first romantic encounter of any kind; she believes every word he says and even though she is intelligent she is also quite naà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ve and very trusting. As time moves on through the play, Juliets entire persona changes and she transforms from an innocent young girl, to a woman who will stop at nothing to be with her love. Another major problem that leads to Romeo and Juliets downfall was the fact that Romeo killed Tybalt. If this had not taken place, it is likely that Romeo and Juliet could have made their marriage public and the feud may have ended. Romeo was angry and upset, as Tybalt had stabbed and killed Mercutio, one of his best friends, he simply did what he believed was right at the time. However, this was possibly one of the worst things Romeo could have done in his situation; any problems Romeo and Juliet had suddenly became much worse. Romeo knows this as soon as he sees Tybalt fall: O, I a fortunes fool. This murder leads to Romeos banishment and both he and Juliet would prefer death to being separated. If Romeo had thought before he fought with Tybalt, he perhaps would have known to stay away, because deep down he knew that he was committing an immoral deed and this action would lead to many more dilemmas and upset. Although it is said that other peoples actions play a major part to Romeo and Juliets deaths, a persons actions are their own doing and the final decision is ultimately their own. The feud between the Montagues and Capulets had been causing problems, antagonism and resentment for years: From ancient grudge break to new mutiny, where civil blood makes civil hands unclean. There were fights in the street (Act 1, Scene 1 and Act 3, Scene1), bitterness between younger members of the family (for example Tybalt) and fear in day to day life. However, against all the odds, Romeo and Juliet met and fell in love. If there had been no feud, or the families could simply build bridges and forget the past, the Romeo and Juliets love may have blossomed and the tale would have had a clichà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½d happily ever after ending. However, bitterness, pride and revenge ruled the families minds and they would do whatever it took, even kill another man, in order to show their pride. These beliefs resulted in tragedy and the needless death of five family members. The Friar, the Prince and even the tired and weary heads of the families tried to end the feud, in vain. However, in the end, it was love which conquered all and managed to end the warfare between the families, even if this love had ended in heartbreak for both families and all around them. The play is set in the Birling's house; as it is a safe place where life is secure and sheltered EssayLord and Lady Capulet do not care about neither Juliets feelings nor the fact that she has not met Paris, never mind love him. They are strict and want their daughter to marry the proper man, from the right class and family and do not mind if she has no say in the matter. Lord and Lady Capulet should have paid more attention to Juliets wishes and listened to her opinions, she was just fourteen years old and did not want to marry Paris, yet this was forced upon her although she made her views perfectly clear: I wonder at this haste, that I must wed ere he that should be husband comes to woo. Juliet believes that this proposal is happening too fast and tells here mother and father that she does not know Paris and that they cannot marry before they courted. Paris is the opposite of Romeos character; he is calm and decorous, whereas Romeo is passionate and impulsive. Paris does everything the correct way, asks Lord Capulet for his daughters hand in marriage and is always polite and well-mannered whereas Romeo has never met his wifes father and is sneaking around behind his back. Although Paris is not the unpleasant character we might expect the heros rival to be, he does quite forcefully encourage the nuptials and coerces Lord Capulet and Juliet into a quick marriage. When they meet at Friar Lawrences cell, Paris calls Juliet his wife and wants her to admit that she loves him: Do not deny to him that you love me. Although he is not directly involved, Paris does contribute to Romeo and Juliets deaths as their impending marriage is another reason why Juliet feels she must run away, or worse, take her own life. Prince Escalus could have done more to help end the feud and keep peace on his streets of Verona. If he had acted earlier and more forcefully, then perhaps Romeo and Juliets marriage would have been a celebration and wonderful love story, instead of a tragedy. There are many other small roles that play a part in Romeo and Juliets downfall, for example Friar John and Balthasar. However, much of these characterss involvement is due to due to fate, mistiming and bad luck. There are many circumstances and coincidental events in the play that lead to the downfall of Romeo and Juliet. Their destiny is foretold in the stars, as stated in the prologue: A pair of star-crossd lovers take their lifeDo with their death bury their parents strife. This quote means that Romeo and Juliets fate is written in the stars in order to end the feud and bring peace among the families. This quote is also a metaphor, describing the lovers as stars, whose love stands out against the harshness of their backgrounds. They are not responsible for their fates; their problems are simply an awful succession of mistimings that destroys them. The entire play takes place over the short space of just four days, which is an extremely short space of time for all of these tragic incidences to happen in and if any one occurrence had been different, all may have turned out well. Aside from the fact that Romeo and Juliet feel so completely in love in such a short space of time; there are an extraordinary amount of coincidences in the play, all of which are unfortunate and lead to the demise of Romeo and Juliet. Firstly, the fact that Romeo should fall in love with an enemys daughter is a tragic central event. Also, the fact that Paris asks for Juliets hand in marriage at the same time is unlucky, as if he had asked perhaps a few weeks earlier, then he would have found himself a happily married man. There are continuous, ominous suggestions that Romeo and Juliet are fated to die; even before Romeo has met Juliet he says: Some consequence, yet hanging in the stars. Shall bitterly begin his fearful dateBy some vile forfeit of untimely death. This statement is correct and as soon as Romeo sees Juliet, they know that their love is a tragic one and could end in disaster due to their families hatred. However, once they meet and are married there are more disastrous incidents awaiting the star-struck couple. The fact that Tybalt kills Mercutio, although this is expected for a while, is the beginning of a growing number of problems. When Romeo kills Tybalt, he exclaims: O, I am fortunes fool, meaning that he is a victim of fate. Fate and mistiming are now Romeo and Juliets main setbacks. With Romeo banished and Juliet distraught over the death of her cousin and the thought of possibly never seeing her husband again, Friar Lawrences plan to give Juliet a potion to fake her own death seems like a loophole where Romeo and Juliet can live happily together; however this plan is not to succeed. Juliet takes the potion and the plan seems to be working, Friar Lawrence sends a letter with a messenger informing Romeo of his plan and arrangements for a funeral are made. However, Romeo and Juliets destiny ensures that this plan does not go accordingly. Romeos servant and friend, Balthasar, hears of Juliets death, rushes to tell his master and Romeo replies: I defy you stars!, meaning fate, and that Juliets death was foretold. Friar John, the messenger with Romeos letter, is held in quarantine and does not emerge in time to deliver the letter to Romeo. These events lead Romeo to the Apothecarys where he buys a poison, to end his life without Juliet: such soon-speeding gear as will disperse itself through all the veins that the life-weary taker may fall dead. More tragedy is to come; Romeo kills Paris who stands in his way of the tomb. Once inside, Romeo says a last goodbye to Juliet and drinks the potion: O true apothecary! Thy drugs are quick. Thus with a kiss I die. Just a she sees Romeo fall, Juliet awakes from her long sleep, but she is too late, another misfortune of fate and she takes Romeos dagger and stabs herself. If she had awoken just minutes earlier, the plan would have worked and the two may have lived happily ever after. In conclusion, there are many people and events which build up and lead to the final demise of Romeo and Juliet, and their tragic end cannot be put down to one solitary event. Although some people play a more significant and obvious role in their death, for example Friar Lawrence, if one single event had been different and their plans had worked out, then perhaps Romeo and Juliet could have run away together and would not have had to take their own lives. However, though it seems that other peoples influences are the main contributors to their problems, Romeo and Juliets fate is written in the stars and chance and coincidence are the dominant themes surrounding their deaths.

We work individually and in a group for our Applied Management project (AMP). We go through within good and bad experience when doing the report. We also learn some new things individually and in a group. The main target is to learn from experience throughout the project. Aims and Objective Aim of the report is to judge our work ourselves and improve our lacking. Through this report we can also have an idea about our own skills and abilities. The main objective of this report is to find out the errors that I made to do the Applied Management Project (AMP) and take lesson from the mistakes. What is Reflective Report? Reflection report is analysis of our work done before. In a reflection report a person or a student mention the experience of his or her work to prepare a project or report. In a reflection report one can include the process of using the skills and abilities he or she has. Greenwood (1993) said about reflection To think about what one is doing whilst one is doing it; it is typically stimulated by surprise, by something which puzzled the practitioner concerned. Kolb (1984) also said reflection is central to the process of turning experience into learning. So the way of learning through experience is reflection. Edgar Schon (1983) describe two way of reflection. One is reflection in action and another is reflection on action. Reflection in action is about looking during the event and reflection on action is looking back after the event. We are doing reflection on action because we are writing this reflection report after we finish our Applied Management Project (AMP). According to Boyd Fales (1983) reflection on action is The process of creating and clarifying the meanings of experiences in terms of self in relation to both self and world. The outcome of this process is changed conceptual perspectives. So from the reflection process we not only can learn but also can improve the lacking. Recollection of experiences We have to do the reflection report after we finish the Applied Management Project (AMP). The main aim to write the reflection report is to learn from our experiences. We got 11 weeks to write this Applied Management Project (AMP). Within these time period we had some good and bad experiences. Sometimes we got some times we got experience which is new to us. After completed the second semester we had a week of learning how to write the Applied Management Project (AMP) and the reflection report. First two days we have given the idea about the process of Applied Management Project (AMP). We got some information about the report writing, plagiarism, Harvard referencing and how to use the resources of the university. The first day we had three classes. The first class was for introduction of the Applied Management Project (AMP) a, the second one was all about report writing and the third one was for information sources and referencing. The second day was also a busy day for us. Three cla sses also held at that day. We had given information about plagiarism in our first class of day two. Then the next class is all about the reflection report and the relevance to write the report. At last we had given our topic in the last class of second they. We are divided into several groups and the group members had to do the report which is given for their group. We have made a group of nine people. We were excited about our topic. We were very happy when we were given the topic. Our topic was Market segmentation and effect of new technology on market segmentation. The reason we were happy because this topic was very important in marketing and also easy from other topics. The class was finished and we had to attend in the tutor support session which started the next day. In this session we had to sit in a group. As our group was made earlier we sat with our group members. At the first day of tutor support session we had given idea about how to use the online resources from the u niversity site. We could collect information from the open sources but all the open sources are not reliable sources. Thats why we are taught how to us the educational journals, magazines, e-books, articles etc. We had also give idea about how we can get useful information about our topic. Then tutors gave us their opinion about the topic. Tutor also told us that as a tutor what they are expecting in the Applied Management Project (AMP). There are five or six tutors who gave their opinion about the topic. We also got time to discuss the topic with our group members. In the session we prepared a format of the report. One of the tutors asked us to collect one article about our topic and bring the article at the next day. We got three days of tutor support session and after that session we could not get the support from the tutors so that three days was very important for us to prepare the report. After that session we set a meeting with our group members to get started the report. We meet three times and discuss about our topic and gave our opinion about the topic. Then we started to work individually. I start to collect data about my topic using university resources. At first I find books about segmentation. I found some books which is very helpful for my Applied Management Project (AMP). My plan was to collect the data about my topic and then start reading. First few days I use to find information about my topic. I search for article, journal, magazines which is related with my topic. I used university library and digital library to find the information. When I feel that the information is enough for my topic I started reading. Then I started to write the Applied Management Project (AMP). This is the first time I was writing a project and long report of 12000 words. Sometimes I get stuck about different topic. Then i take help of my friend and discuss with them about the problem. Personal feeling and learning from the experience The Applied Management Project (AMP) is developed to show our skills and ability learned from the Msc Marketing and Business management. To write the report I learn some new things and I use my skills and knowledge. Throughout the report writing process I also did some mistakes. According to Gibbs model of reflection (1998), we must go through a cycle to complete the report. Description The first one is description. In this part what is happened throughout the report writing must be described. This is my first time to write a project. So I was a little bit nervous. But when I started writing the report I get confidence to write the project. And I also learn process to write a project. The project is all about secondary research. We does not require the primary research process. Feeling In my mind there are some questions about the Applied Management project (AMP). Can I do the project? Can I complete the project in time? How will be the project? Will I get a good grade in the project? When I start writing the report I realized that the time is enough for the project because we do not need to do primary survey. Applied Management Project (AMP) was a huge report with 12000 words. I was confused about the timing of the project. When I completed the project my feeling also changed. I also get the answer of my questions time to time. Evaluation I started to write the report 20 days before. Sometimes I want to work in the university library for long time but the university made a short timetable for the summer time. But when I search information I get more knowledge about the searching of information and time management. I also developed my writing skills. I spent lots of time to searching and writing the report. But I did not spent enough time to read the books, articles, journals and magazines. So If I do any project or report in future I will use the proper use of time to search information, read them and writing. I also use references in the project which I think not enough for the research. I can include more references for my project which can make the project more effective. So I learn several things. Some are good, some are bad. I must improve my skills and take lesson from my mistakes. Analysis To write the Applied Management Project (AMP) I made a plan and work according to my plan. I set a time to study which is one of the important part of my plan. I also give myself some rest because if I work restless my work may be not as good as I want. I made a schedule for my project. I divided the topic into several parts. As example Segmentation methods, different types of segmentation, effect of new technology on market segmentation etc. I start to work part by part. At a time I concentrate only one part of the project which helps me to get read of workloads. So I can finish my project timely because of the planning. Conclusion During the project writing I developed my skills. I was slow in typing but because of the Applied Management Project (AMP) my typing speed increase. My writing quality also developed during this time. But I must improve my information search activities because sometimes I get confused about the information which is important for my project. I also use my time properly. But if I can spend more time in university library then my report might be better. Action Plan For next time I will complete my project before 15 days. Because if I can get time to revise the project then I believe the report will be more improved. But this time I get only one day to revise the report. When I revise the report some points which I can write more but because of the time I could not do this. If I get any opportunity in the future I will try to avoid the mistakes and make my plan properly for the report. Group dynamics and learning from the experience Working in a group or team is more effective than working alone. People usually can perform better when he or she work with a group or team. People who work in a group or team can share their feelings and experience about their work. Sometimes people learn and improve themselves from the advice of other people. We also get the opportunity to work in a team. For our Applied Management Project (AMP) we have to make a group. We made a group of nine people and start work in a group. Working in a group or team is a learning experience to me. According to Guirdham (2002) people within the group must have some characteristics. People must have good behaviour, norms and co-operation. Without co-operation a group could not become successful. There is a chance to conflict within the group. But people of group must have problem solving attitude. Crainer (1998) said that in a group different people perform different their skills and abilities. We are also working as a team when we have given the topic of Applied Management Project (AMP). Working in a group is effective for us. Within a group all group members must listen to each other. Without this listening behaviour one can not perform well in the group. In a group every one must give importance to each other. If someone neglect or underestimate anyone it may harm himself. Every one has different thoughts and different understanding. So within the group we start to listen each other. Everyone told to discuss their own view about the topic. We get some new and interesting idea about our topic after the discussion session. This discussion session take long time but it was really effective for everyone. Belbin (1993) introduced most effective analysis about individual role within a group or a team. According to Belbin (1993) a successful group must have different range of roles which is undertaking by different members of group. Mullins (2005, p.557) Belbin said for successful group or team member must have nine team roles. Which are- Plant Resource investigator Co-ordinator Shaper Monitor evaluator Team worker Implementer Completer Specialist So people within the team must have these nine characteristics team roles. In our team different members has different attitude. We have a team leader who actually co-ordinate the works between the team members. At the first meeting we are told to collect some articles and journals about our topic. One person of our team was given the responsibility to manage the meeting among us. In our second meeting all of us collect some articles and journals about our topic. Then we all asked to share own opinion about market segmentation. We all try to share what we know about the segmentation. We take note from the discussion. Some of them are really helpful for our project. We try to divide the work equally within the group members. Working in a group was very good experience for me. I dont know everything. Different people have different way of thinking. We share our opinion and learn from other people of group. Although the group work is time consuming, we can learn lots of new things from the group. Working in a group gives me more confident. But sometimes group work can frustrate us. In our group meeting two members always came late. We cant start our work in time for them. This thing makes a bad impact within the group members. Some group members want to start work without them. But one day when we start our work and they came, we have to discuss the matter again to them. So it kills our time and some members become angry. Our group was formed on the basic of friendship. Thats why we cant say anything to the members who come late. If our group was formed according to work, the group was more effective than this group. I also learn a lit about my individual performance and personality. Within a group I judge myself with the other group members who help me to know my ability and performance. I also learn one thin about the group work and that is people act differently when they work alone or in a group. Because when I use to talk to one person of my group I act diffe rent way and my talk within the group is also different. This is an interesting characteristic of human nature. So as a member of a team I learn so many things which will help me in my future when I work in a team or group. Ethics on Outsourcing Essay

Outsourcing is a very controversial topic with both positive and negative aspects. Before approaching to an answer of â€Å"Yes† or â€Å"No† to the above statement, I would like to keep an open mind and be able to see both sides of the situation in order to have an accurate view of the issue. According to wikipedia. com, outsourcing is subcontracting a process, such as product design or manufacturing, to a third-party company. In his book, â€Å"Crafting & Executing Strategy†, Arthur and his co-authors outlines that outsourcing involves a conscious decision to abandon or forgo attempts to perform certain value chain activities internally and instead to farm them out to outside specialists and strategic allies. Outsourcing has become one of the fastest growing trends in the business world. There are many reasons that a company would elect to use outsourcing. Among them is the fact that it provides an almost immediate opportunity for savings resulted from outsides that can often perform certain activities better or cheaper. Outsourcing allows a company to focus its entire energies on those activities at the center of its core competencies and that are the most critical to its competitive and financial success. In order to achieve deemed advantageous of outsourcing, following criterion have been discussed in the chapter 6 – Supplementing the Chosen Competitive Strategy of the book â€Å"Crafting & Executing Strategy†: 1. An activity can be performed better or more cheaply by outside specialists 2. The activity is not crucial to the company’s ability to achieve sustainable competitive advantage and won’t hollow out its core competencies capabilities, or technical know-how 3. It reduce the company’s risk exposure to changing technology and/or changing buyer preference 4. It improves a company’s ability to innovate 5. It streamlines company operations in ways that improve organizational flexibility and cuts the time it takes to get new products into the marketplace 6. It allows a company to assemble diverse kinds of expertise speedily and efficiently 7. It allows a company to concentrate on its core business, leverage its key resource, and do even better what it already does best While it’s possible for a company to outsource virtually any kind of service, several were especially common in the e-commerce arena where positive impacts have been demonstrated. Among them were IT management; logistics and order fulfillment; Internet video production, management, and distribution; customer relationship management; and Web site development and hosting. The ease and cost efficiency of handling different aspects of e-commerce in-house was easier and more cost-effective for some companies than it was for others, so companies outsourced services differently. Many companies looked to outside parties to handle online order fulfillment (filling and shipping orders they received via the Internet) instead of building or renting their own warehouse operations, which required special expertise for e-commerce. This freed them to focus on core competencies like creating new products and services, and marketing. When companies rely on third-party fulfillment providers, they normally manage the front end of e-commerce (the content and appearance of their Web site) and leave the rest to the third party. In other words, the third party receives orders from customers, manages the inventory of available products in its warehouse, and coordinates shipping. Some also provide value-added extras like customer service. Another example of outsourcing involves application service providers (ASPs), third parties who manage business applications for companies so they can focus more on their core business. These applications often involve things like payroll, billing, and customer service. The software systems offered by the ASP are sometimes Web-based, so that client companies do not have to host the software and devote resources to maintaining and updating them. Although ASPs held the potential to simplify things for client companies, they also moved long-held control over internal systems and data to outside parties, which made some organizations uncomfortable. The hierarchal structure of business is another area that has the potential to be impacted by outsourcing. If an aspect of a business, such as Human Resources, is controlled by an outside group, human resources are thus removed from an organization and its formal structure. An advantage to this would be the prospect of expanding into locations that have not yet been outsourced. At the same time, the departmentalization of the structure would most likely need to be altered to meet with the changes resulting from the outsourcing. Above mentioned outsourcing activities are considered as the best practice of one core concept introduced in the book â€Å"Crafting ; Executing Strategy†: A company should generally not perform any value chain activity internally that can be performed more efficiently or effectively by outsiders – the chief exception is when a particular activity is strategically crucial and internal control over that activity is deemed essential. Bread and Wine essays Throughout the novel Bread and Wine, author Ignazio Silone uses different stories and anecdotes of peasant characters as both a break from the main plot and to help understand the main character, Pietro Spina/Don Paolo Spada better. Sarty (Sartoris) is found torn between the smell of cheese and the smell of ‘blood’. Sarty is sure that he smelt cheese even though he is unable to read the letters on the tin cans. The smell is pleasant and he likes it. However, he is unable to enjoy the smell of cheese as it is polluted with the smell of ‘blood’. Here, the author has used ‘blood’ as symbol of ‘loyalty and duty towards the family’. The smell of blood is not ‘real’ but is a psychological symbol of ‘family’. Interestingly, the smell of blood that Sarty senses is also joined by the sense of fear. It reminds Sarty of the despair and grief that he has experienced. It teaches us specifically about the dangers of fast food as well as what foods are better options! Supersize Me is a great teaching tool for all who watch. This documentary shows us the risks of eating fast food, specifically McDonald’s. Morgan Spurlock ate nothing but McDonald’s fast food for thirty days straight. He gained 25 pounds and also doubled his chances for heart disease, which shocked me. I knew that fast food was terrible, but that quick of a weight gain plus the drastic increase for chances of heart disease was astounding. It took Morgan 14 months to lose his extra weight and he said it was nothing close to being easy, which I can believe. The fact that forty percent of meals are eaten out of the house daily is a crazy statistic and one that I believe should not exist! I completely agree that fast food is a problem that contributes to obesity. As the documentary stated, sixty percent of overweight people eat fast food consistently. I am very glad that this documentary included ways schools are affecting obesity in their students, as I think that bad eating habits start at a young age. Any chance to decrease obesity and poor health due to diet is a positive change, and I salute the schools that are trying to do so. Some schools have banned soda vending machines and even prohibited students from bringing soda, which I think is a great start. I think that school lunches, however, are generally on the unhealthy side. More should be done to promote healthy dietary habits that go beyond removing soda. Overall, this documentary was a great one. I hate it for Spurlock that he had to go through all the health issues. It scared me when he got so bad that the doctors were telling him to stop so his heart and liver didn’t give out. To watch that happen to someone is hard, especially when it is 100% preventable from a dietary standpoint. Also, I like how this film pointed out McDonald’s specifically. Being the first fast food restaurant in the world has also led it to be the biggest. Which, may be great for them and all, but the fact that it contributes to forty-three percent of the fast food industry is incredible, and not in a good way. Going into nursing really  makes me view the world in a different light. This documentary opened my eyes to the dangers of fast food. I personally enjoy eating some French fries and chicken nuggets every now and then. But now I am much more cautious about how often I do this. I know that eating it every day for every meal is way different than eating it every now and again, maybe a few times a month, but the fact that the food served at these restaurants (can you even call it that?) have so much power to harm the body is something that the world should know! And I am g lad that Supersize Me aimed to inform!

Rebels of Dharma Bums, Takin' it to the Streets and New American Poetry      Ã‚  Ã‚   You don't need a destination to run away. All you have to know is what you are leaving behind. In the 1960's, young men and women in the United States, especially on the west coast, made a mad dash away from almost two centuries of American tradition. They ran to so many different places that it would be impossible to generalize about their aims and philosophies. What they had in common was the running itself.    America was drowning in materialism. In "A Coney Island of the Mind," Lawrence Ferlinghetti characterized the land of the free and the home of the brave as "a concrete continent spaced with bland billboards illustrating imbecile illusions of happiness" (New American Poetry, ed. Allen, p131).    John Sinclair criticized a country that needed "Eighty-seven different brands of toothpaste" and "Millions of junky automobiles" (Takin' it to the Streets, ed. Bloom, p303). After the novelty of cars and other products wore off, some Americans began to feel that the emphasis on production was changing the character of the country. Economic prosperity had gone to America's head, and in the scramble for profit idealism had been left behind. Kafka is quoted by Richard Brautigan in his novel Trout Fishing in America as having said that "I like the Americans because they are healthy and optimistic." (Takin' it to the Streets, p280) The new generation of Americans, however, was nowhere near optimistic about the future of their country. They saw the land of the free and the home of the brave degenerating into a production line of television sets and plastic gizmos.    The loss of individuality was what many feared. They were the ones who, according to Ginsberg, "howled on their knees in the subway and were dragged off the roof waving genitals and manuscripts" (p185). However, all their manuscripts said different things. The Mask of Hamlet  Ã‚  Ã‚     Ã‚   When people put on a mask or costume it is usually because they are trying to hide themselves or portray a certain feeling to onlookers. In Shakespeare's Hamlet, Hamlet puts on a "antic disposition" as a strategy to get closer to Claudius. Hamlet tells his friends this by saying (I,iv,170-173) "how strange or odd some'er I bear myself (As I perchance hereafter shall think meet to put an antic disposition on), That you, at such times seeing me, never shall, with arms encumb'red thus, or this head-shake, or by pronouncing of some doubtful phrase," Hamlet's strategy is successful at the beginning in that he is able to fool Ophilia, Gertrude, Polonius and Claudius but as the play proceeds Polonius and Claudius began to see that there is logic behind his madness and actions. Toward the end Hamlets strategy becomes a tragic error when he begins to act solely on emotion instead of logic. In doing so he makes the mistake of killing Polonius instead of Claudius. Claudius then realize s that it would have been him dead instead of Polonius if he had been there. This scares Claudius in to trying to get rid of Hamlet any way he can. This explains the old saying "You can fool some of the people some of the time, but you can't fool all of the people all of the time."      Ã‚  Ã‚   Hamlet's reason for putting on his antic disposition is that he wants to fool Claudius into believing that he is fanatical and is no threat to him physically or to his anarchy. The reason for doing this is that Claudius secretly killed Old Hamlet, who was king to gain the thrown for himself. Since the time of the first colonizers that set foot in America, there have been great debates regarding the preservation of the Wilderness or the promotion of Civilization. For as far as common sense thinking would be concerned, it is quite impossible for these two to exist at the same place and at the same time. As could be seen in the essay â€Å"Of Plymouth Plantation†, one could see what a civilization or the introduction of civilization has brought to the people. If one would follow the story, as civilization was brought from England to the Wilderness of America, there have been wars and competition, along with conflicts of intentions. In this regard, it would not be a good idea to establish civilizations in areas were people have already created their own native traditions. The imposition of a civilization to another would most likely cause chaos. There have also been wide arrays of bloodshed, deception and trickery. Nevertheless, if the civilization was not introduced there would be no America today. The introduction of civilization has led primitive America settlements become more organize and modernized.   The introduction of weapons, as shown in the Plymouth story have improved the hunting skills of Indians and increased their defense. However, it has resulted to more trees being burned and more animals being killed, meaning, the destruction of the wilderness. In light of this, I would like to create a study that would focused on which of the two, between wilderness and civilization, weighs more and must be preserved or supported. As could blatantly be seen, on the story â€Å"Of Plymouth Plantation†, there is a conflict of whether it would be better to leave the forest and tickets as it is with its Indian people or to pursue the goal of introducing a civilization in the area. I would like to study the literary history behind the decision made by the governor of Plymouth not to help the England colonizer nevertheless they have go against the natives who are little by little learning the knowledge and technology that was present during their time. I would also try to locate other conflicts in the story that have affected touch the wilderness versus civilization issue. It could have been the political understatement that could be seen to reflect the different intentions behind the issue. This study is worth of consideration since it would help determine which facet of society one should support. It would also help determine what are the merits and demerits of a civilization and wilderness with respect to the actions and reactions done by the people in Plymouth. At the end of this study, readers would become fully aware if the conflict of wilderness and civilization in the story should be resolved as a political, economical issue or an issue of personal gain. Since the story was about why America would want to go against or become independent from the rule of England, the section regarding the pursuit of belonging and introducing the â€Å"English civilization† is also one aspect that must be looked upon. The author of the story might have believed that introducing an English type of Civilization along with its renowned religion might only damaged the wilderness and the consciousness of the relationships of the people in the new country.
